From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
The Epitome of Dignity and Respect in the Care of Loved Ones After Death
Our first contact with Francis Chappell & Sons, Sydenham, was after my beloved mother passed away last January. From our very first conversation with the wonderful Julie, our appointed funeral expert, my family and I were treated with the utmost care, compassion and attention.
My mother had a Dignity plan, and it was evident from the outset that every one of her final wishes would be carried out exactly as she intended. Julie, in my opinion, was the model of professionalism during what was an incredibly emotional and difficult time for us.
The consultation was flawless, methodical and always conducted at our pace.Julie explained every stage of the process with great sensitivity and patience. Every detail, however small, was covered carefully and thoughtfully. My sister and I left that meeting feeling completely reassured that our mother would be treated with the dignity and respect she deserved.
One especially memorable moment for me that remains incredibly poignant for me was my visit to the Chapel of Rest. This was my final time with Mum and I was emotional on arrival. Julie had arranged everything beautifully. The room was serene, softly decorated with flowers and scented oils, creating a peaceful and comforting atmosphere.
Mum looked so serene. She had been dressed with great care in the clothing we had provided, and every detail had been attended to. I was given all the time I needed to say goodbye, to play some of her favourite music, and simply to be with her. I was never rushed. I was also given a beautiful crocheted heart, which remains such a touching and treasured keepsake.
My mother had chosen cremation, and Julie was exemplary in arranging every aspect of this for us: the cremation schedule, the crematorium, the celebrant, the order of service for the cremation. She was always available to answer questions or to reassure us if we had any concerns. We were kept informed at every stage and reassure that we should do everything only when we felt ready and comfortable to do so.
The level of holistic and personal care we received was unlike anything we had experienced with previous Funeral Directors.
Care and service did not end after the cremation and my mother’s ashes are still being cared for by Francis Chappell until she is interred in her country of birth, Guyana. Knowing that she remains in such safe and respectful hands has brought us enormous comfort.
In my opinion, Francis Chappell & Sons is the gold standard in dignity in death care. They exceeded all of our expectations. They reduced the burden of worry, organisation and uncertainty, allowing us the space to grieve and to focus on the few things we needed to do for mums cremation ourselves.
The care, support and expertise we received from especially Julie was truly exemplary. She showed extraordinary empathy, professionalism and patience throughout a very difficult time for us.
Beyond the funeral itself, we were invited to an annual memorial service in December. It was a beautiful and dignified occasion in which families could remember their loved ones together. The service was exceptional and a further testament to the dedication, compassion and high standards of everyone at Francis Chappell & Sons.
Thank you, to all staff at Francis Chappell & Sons, Sydenham, especially Julie, for your kindness, empathy, professionalism and patience. You are a true credit to the service.
Warmest regards,
Denise ✝️
