From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Compassionate and Professional Service
I would like to sincerely thank the team at Francis Chappell for the respectful and dignified way they handled my mum’s funeral. From our first meeting, the staff were kind, understanding, and incredibly supportive during such a difficult time.
Every detail was taken care of with professionalism and compassion, which gave us real peace of mind. Their guidance throughout the process was invaluable, and the service itself was a beautiful tribute to my mum.
Thank you again to everyone at Francis Chappell for your care and sensitivity — it meant so much to our family.
From our first meeting until the end, we could not have asked for a more professional and compassionate service. Very caring people. Even telephoned the next day to say they were still there for us if we need them. Our Auntie would have been very happy. Thank you all.
A truly caring and professional company. Wanting to give the while family peace to say goodbye to our loved one.
From start to finish Francis Chappell have been amazing. From the moment they arranged my Uncles Funeral to the day of the Funeral they have been professional and above all so caring. From the flowers to my Uncle arriving at the Crematorium, i cant praise them enough! The Celebrant, Sarah, had gone above and beyond to write a tribute to my very very private Uncle. They all they, collectively, made a very difficult day a very nice day. Thankyou to Francis Chappell and everyone, i cant recommdend them enough for a fitting caring goodbye to a loved one.
