From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Excellent service, everything ran smoothly on the day and we were able to give Mum a dignified goodbye. Many thanks to Annette and her staff at the Welling office.
This is the 2nd time that I have arranged a funeral at Francis Chappell Verdant Lane.
I had no hesitation in selecting them as they are professional, understanding and compassionate. All needs exceeded expectations especially when dealing with matters at such an upsetting time. I honestly cannot fault their integrity and understanding-especially Caroline and Nigel, who went above and beyond in making the arrangements on my behalf . I can whole-heartedly recommend them especially when you are at your lowest and need guidance and support.
After my mum passed away my brother and I had the unenviable task of organising the funeral. We spoke to and visited a number of funeral directors but Francis Chappell were head and shoulders above anybody else. They were kind, compassionate and did everything they could to make sure we had the funeral our mum would have been proud of.
Even at the last minute when we said it would be nice if everyone could wear scarlet coloured ties (our mum was called Scarlett) they made sure the ties were that shade of red.
Nobody wants to have to organise a funeral but if you have to I would highly recommend you use Francis Chappell, you won’t regret it
It's the time of year for celebrants to thank the Francis Chappell & Son teams that work so hard throughout the year. Last night, at Verdant Lane, many celebrants and staff from branches across South East London and North Kent , enjoyed some downtime together- a good and well-deserved breather in our lives, dedicated to helping people through the toughest times. In the thanks that you gave your celebrants last night, and that you stayed behind at the end of your already busy days, your dedication shone through - so I want to thank you for all your tireless work for the benefit of the families we help throughout the year. Every one of you is a pearl.
I can only send the very highest praises to all at Francis Chappell at Catford. From the very first phone call with Caroline, through to the care and compassion she showed when supporting my family, they have been incredible.
This has been an incredibly difficult time for us, and the way Caroline helped us to make the right choices for mum was amazing. She comforted us and guided us wonderfully, and the rest of the team have provided incredible service to ensure everything was just as we wanted and impeccably done.
Without hesitation I would recommend Francis Chappell at Catford. My family are forever grateful for what they have done for us.
